“I think the greenhouse just got 100 times cuter.”
Otani Ninja Deterrent® was commissioned by Izumi Mori, the Japanese model and television personality widely recognized for her work in DIY and home design, to design and fabricate a one-of-a-kind roof ornament for the greenhouse in her private "Giving Garden" in Tokyo.
The completed piece was installed in July 2025 and later featured on Ms. Mori's YouTube channel, Izumi Mori's IZOOMI Channel.
In May 2025, Ms. Mori reached out through our Etsy storefront with a clear brief: she wanted her greenhouse to evoke the character of a traditional English conservatory.
Because Otani Ninja Deterrent® serves primarily international clients, an inquiry written in Japanese was unusual. We handled it as we would any commission, beginning with a detailed consultation on the structure, its dimensions, and its surroundings.
The greenhouse is set against a dense backdrop of mature trees. The ornament needed to hold its own as a distinct architectural element while remaining in harmony with the surrounding greenery, two goals that pull in opposite directions.
To resolve this, we returned to the founding idea behind Ninja Deterrent®: metalwork that serves as ornament first, enhancing the architecture it sits on rather than merely protecting it.
The final design is built around the image of new growth unfolding into foliage.
Development took approximately three days, from initial sketches to a fully dimensioned drawing. Ms. Mori approved the design, describing it as "absolutely wonderful."
It was only at this stage, while arranging fabrication, that we confirmed our client was in fact the Izumi Mori. She replied with characteristic good humor, and the project moved directly into production.
The ornament was fabricated in Higashi-Osaka by our manufacturing partner, Matsuda Sangyo Co., Ltd., and delivered to the client. In early July 2025, Ms. Mori confirmed the installation was complete, sharing her first impressions: "The ornament is so cool."
Ms. Mori subsequently presented the greenhouse and its new roof ornament on her YouTube channel, describing the piece throughout the video as both "cool" and "cute." For a piece designed to balance presence with charm, we could not have asked for a more fitting description.
In the video, Ms. Mori thanked "the craftsman from Kyoto." Matsuda Sangyo later offered a friendly correction on X:

The confusion is understandable. In Japan, Ninja Deterrent® keeps a deliberately low profile and is offered only to international markets. For the record, this piece was designed in Osaka and fabricated in Higashi-Osaka.
