Project Overview

Located in a quiet area just outside of downtown Washington, D.C., this modern apartment building presented yet another unique security challenge. The owner requested an enhancement of the property's security with existing design aesthetic. Focused on eliminating potential weak areas.

The target area is the 3m high wooden entrance gate, the adjacent concrete sections, and the steel screen fence protecting the stairway. As a solution that harmonized the textures and linear composition of each element, we proposed and installed Gothic Black Dual Blade along the top.

Tall wooden gate sandwiched between concrete wing walls. The top is continuously crowned with black GIZAGIZA HEART.

Product: Gothic Black Dual Blade

The Gothic Black Dual Blade possesses a clear function as an anti-climb deterrent, without appearing overtly aggressive. The sharp edges of the tips, combined with a heart-patterned design, it prevents the space from feeling too rigid and retains a visually pleasing look.

Potential handholds and footholds for intruders are meticulously eliminated with a Gothic-inspired design. As a result, it provides a calm strength to the entire exterior, integrating as an architectural detail rather than an obnoxious security feature.

A security line that seamlessly blends with the chic wooden gate and concrete wing walls.

Incorporating GIZAGIZA HEART along the top edge of the steel screen surrounding the stair tower.

The protection extends to the steel screen that wraps the stair tower, where the Gothic line follows the top edge of the mesh. Even on this purely utilitarian element, the spikes read as a deliberate part of the composition rather than an afterthought. The stairway stays open and airy, while its most climbable edge is quietly sealed off.

Steel mesh screen enclosing a stairway, crowned with black anti-climb spikes along the top edge.

Black Gothic spikes crown the steel mesh screen that encloses the stairway, denying any grip along its top edge. Behind the screen, the metal stairs remain fully usable and in plain view, so nothing about daily access changes. What changes is that the one route a climber might have used to reach the upper levels is now closed.

Folding the crown at the corners, circumventing the concrete corner to eliminate leverage points.

At the corners, the crown is folded to follow the concrete returns instead of stopping short. Corners are where anti-climb lines most often leave a gap, and a single exposed edge can become the foothold that defeats the entire run. Carrying the spikes cleanly around each angle removes those leverage points altogether.

Oblique view. It can be read as a delicate shadow line along the top edge.

Seen on the oblique, the installation reads as little more than a thin shadow line tracing the top of the boundary. That restraint is intentional: from the sidewalk it nearly disappears into the architecture, preserving the building's clean lines. Up close, the very same line delivers an unmistakable "no entry" message.

Front of the wooden gate with keypad. The entire span is integrally crowned with GIZAGIZA HEART.

At the keypad entrance, the full span of the gate is integrally crowned in Gothic Black Dual Blade. The result feels built-in rather than retrofitted, sharing the rhythm and finish of the gate itself. Residents pass through exactly as before, while the top of the gate offers nothing to grab and nowhere to stand.

Design Notes

Gothic continues the precise rhythm created by the exposed steel and concrete surfaces like a slender crown. Barely noticeable from the sidewalk, but its purpose becomes immediately clear as you move closer. This is a design for a complete boundary rather than security on display. There is now place to grab. It completes the safe boundary without sacrificing aesthetics.

Property Owner's Remarks:

"Even though the fence's height is 3 meters and already difficult to climb over, the security spikes ensure a guaranteed deterrence that any attempt is impossible."

Summary

In this project, the Gothic Black Dual Blade was continuously added to the top of the 2 unified materials —wood x modern concrete x steel screen— to deter intrusion risks without altering or adjusting the existing design. This project serves as a benchmark for those seeking a simple yet Gothic-inspired security finish.
